Surbiton High School students from Years 10 -13 recently gathered for an evening of History. The evening kicked off with an interesting presentation by Meriel Jeater (curator – Museum of London). Students in Year 13 then gave extended project presentations on the holocaust, Louis XIV and the First Crusade. The students had completed these in-depth history research projects independently. By doing so they were gaining a useful taste of university study where the onus is very much on the personal organisational skills and motivation of the student for their studies. The audience was impressed by the girls’ presentation skills and depth of knowledge. One student commented: “ It was interesting to find out about three very distinct historical eras in under an hour !”. A student ambassador from the History department of Queen Mary University of London finished off the evening by sharing his experiences of studying history and journalism and gave the girls a valuable insight into how the history degree works and what you can do careerswise afterwards. The message at the end of the evening was loud and clear – please can we have more of the same perhaps in other curriculum areas?
