Surrey’s Christmas drink-drive campaign focuses on lives shattered as a result of drinking and driving.
On average, nearly four people a month are killed or seriously injured on Surrey’s roads, as a result of drivers under the influence of drink or drugs.
Surrey Police, Surrey County Council and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are reminding drivers of the consequences if they flout the law and put lives at risk.
The campaign, which supports the year-long Drive Smart campaign tackling antisocial driving, will include enforcement by Surrey Police, targeting any driver involved in a collision or suspected by an officer of being impaired through drink or drugs.
It will also include publicity material specifically targeting male drivers in their teens and 20s, who are most likely to drink and drive, according to breath-test statistics.
The stark image of a car crashed into a tree with the message, ‘He should have crashed at yours’, and similar pictures will be used in cinemas, in pub and bar washrooms across the county and on Facebook, to target men in the 19-60 age range.
For the first time, text messaging will also be used to help get the message across.
Anyone calling 118 118 to request telephone numbers for restaurants, pubs and clubs in Surrey will receive a drink-drive warning message with the reply text.
