By Community Correspondent Rebecca McGoran Naomi Kenny adopted five battery hen chickens following a programme shown after the news, where people had rescued battery hens; “like a fool I thought I could do that”. She then emailed the battery hen welfare trust about adopting some chickens. They save a batch every few months. They grab as many chickens as they can carry; those that are not saved are sold to Chinese takeaways. This has greatly changed her view on mass produced chickens.
Naomi originally had five chickens however, one was killed by a fox, one was found dead, and the others were killed by Frankie, the only remaining chicken. She pecked their egg vents; this is usual behaviour for battery hens as they are so disturbed. However, she says “she’s lovely even though she’s a mass murderer… she has a great personality”.
Naomi was pleased that she rescued the chickens and would have loved to rescue more but feared Frankie would kill them. She would definitely recommend people to rescue battery chickens. They produce an egg a day and are very cheap to feed and look after.
