Motorists who ignored a seriously injured policeman on a busy road have been branded “disgusting” by the officer’s sergeant.

PCSO Rui Azevedo was knocked off his motorbike in Raynes Park, causing serious head and leg injuries, while riding home from work at rush hour.

No witnesses to the crash have come forward, and some cars even drove around the highly regarded officer as he lay injured on the floor.

Police have now launched an appeal for witnesses. The driver of a silver Ford Fiesta thought to be involved in the collision, which took place on November 26, stopped at the scene.

Acting Sergeant Dan Wheatley, PCSO Azevedo’s boss at the Raynes Park safer neighbourhood team (SNT), said: “It’s appalling that members of the public did not have time to stop.”

The 43-year-old was knocked off his motorbike near the level crossing between West Barnes Lane and Burlington Road at about 5.10pm. He was taken to St George’s Hospital in Tooting for emergency treatment, and is now recovering at home.

PCSO Azevedo joined the team from Kingston in September.

Sgt Wheatley said the team had been “inundated” with calls and messages of support for their colleague since the accident. The sergeant said: “He is a perfect role model for PCSOs, and he can’t wait to get back to work.”

He added: “We know there are witnesses out there who would have seen the accident.”
