Sixty reservists from the London Regiment, London’s only Territorial Army Infantry Regiment, have begun training to prepare for their deployment to Afghanistan next year.
The reservists, including estate agents, engineers, project managers, prison officers and teachers, have been mobilised as full-time soldiers for 12 months.
They include residents of Tulse Hill and Streatham.
Their training will focus on developing weapons handling, marksmanship skills and counter insurgency tactics. The reservists will also receive cultural awareness training and will learn medical skills.
The unit has previously provided infantary support to the regular army in Iraq in 2004, and Afghanistan in 2007.
