The register office is trying to trace 10 “millennium babies” who were born on the first day of this century at St George’s Hospital.

The babies and their parents attended a Champagne reception with councillors 10 years ago to celebrate the turn of the century.

At the time, the mayor promised to hold another event for the parents to mark 2010, but the council only holds their addresses and since then many families may have moved house.

Judith Gent, superintendent registrar, said: “It’s a nightmare, because the only details we have is where they lived 10 years ago.

“A reunion was promised to all the families of these babies so I hope we can reach them all to make it a millennium milestone to remember.”

The reception was originally held for 13 babies, three of whom have already been traced by the council.

Letters have been sent out to the remaining 10, but Ms Gent fears many may not reach their intended recipients.

She contacted the Wandsworth Guardian in the hope the families might recognise themselves.

The babies are: Edmund Brack, Paul Johnston, Lauren and Evelyn Cotter, Joseph Frean, Benjamin Gentle, William Swan, Jada Joseph, Charles Reynolds and Marina Ramsay.

Those already confirmed are Leigh-Anne Tancu, Sion Thomas and William Bates.

Staff are hoping to hold a buffet reception at the town hall for the children in the week beginning Monday, January 4.

If enough people attend, they plan to put up a board with baby photos of the children, who, as they grow up, will always be as old as the century.

Ms Gent said: “The staff are really looking forward to seeing how the kids have grown up.”

Parents are urged to contact Ms Gent at the town hall as soon as possible so a date can be set.
