Wallington and Carshalton MP Tom Brake has welcomed the success of a 6-year campaign to prevent scald injuries to children and pensioners in baths.
New building regulations have now been introduced to prevent scalding by installing protective devices that limit the temperature of water supplied to any new fixed baths to 48 °C.
The campaign called on the Government to prevent scald injuries by fitting thermostatic mixing values (TMVs) to all new baths.
The MP said: “I am delighted that these new regulations have been introduced. This simple measure will reduce the number of children who suffer the pain of scalding injuries each year.”
Every day, a child under five is admitted to hospital with severe bath scalds and one pensioner a month dies as a result of scalding injuries.
The campaign was supported by Age Concern, the British Burns Association, the Child Accident Prevention Trust, the Children's Fire and Burn Trust, Help the Aged, and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
