Walton’s annual Christmas spectacular rolled into town on Friday, and the big light switch on did not disappoint.

Organised by Walton Business Group (WBG) and hosted by Radio Jackie, the Festival of Light was a three hour festive bonanza, packed with late-night promotions and family entertainment.

School children and community groups created a river of light with lanterns during a parade from 7pm and huge, intricate lanterns weaved in and out of the parade to provide a focal point for the festive display.

Pupils from Cleves School, Weybridge, and Grovelands School, Walton, took part for the first time and took the title of the youngest participants to date.

The mayoress of Elmbridge, Councillor Rosemary Vickers, officially welcomed Christmas to the town when she switched on the lights at the Heart’s giant Christmas tree.

Sarah-Jane Shellard, director of WBG said: “The WBG is delighted that the Festival of Light has become a key part of Walton’s Christmas. It is a wonderful community event with lots of fun for the family and great way to show off the wonderful shops and restaurants all around the town.”

School choirs, a theatre group and soloist Charlotte Beattie, from Escape Hair and Beauty filled the air with Christmas carols while shoppers took advantage of some great offers and did a bit of Christmas shopping.

Father Christmas was at Chella Cafe in Bridge Street, with his friends from Walton Rotary Club, while ladies’ boutique Pink Ice offered visitors champagne and nibbles.

Elsewhere, Boots staged a puppet show for kids, the Wellington pub offered mince pies and mulled wines to punters, and new toy store Inside Out showed an artistic side by painting children’s faces.
