Bedfont Green 0 Staines Town 1 by Steve Parsons Staines Town moved a step closer to a Middlesex Senior Cup final clash at their Wheatsheaf Lane home on Easter Monday with a 1-0 quarter-final win over Bedfont Green at Windsor & Eton FC on Tuesday night.
Staines, who have not won the competition since 1997, fielded a full-strength side with the exception of Ali Chaaban, who picked up an injury on Saturday.
In the first senior meeting between the sides, Staines tore into their Zamaretto League opponents from the off, winning 12 corners during a one-sided first half.
However, the Bedfont Green defence was resolute and, despite the best efforts of Mazin Ahmad, Scott Taylor and Leroy Griffiths, Staines could find no way through.
The second half shaped up in similar fashion, although the hosts did pose more of a threat.
However, Bedfont Green lost Tommy McCarthy to a suspected broken ankle just seven minutes after he came on as substitute.
Howard Newton and Marien Ifura joined the ranks of Swans players to be denied by some impenetrable defending by the home side.
The Swans’ last chance of winning the game in normal time seemed to have slipped away when Dean Thomas was put clean through, only for the referee to fail to allow advantage, blowing for an earlier foul.
However, the free-kick was cleared for an injury-time corner, and Ahmad's near post flag-kick was bundled over the line by Michael Kamara, the right-back thus netting his first goal for the club.
Staines will visit the winners of next week’s tie between Enfield Town and AFC Hayes in the semi-final on March 9.
