In 100 years the goat boy of Seething and the tale of his titanic battle to drive out the giant Thamas Deeton may have a firm place in urban legend.

Members of the community, through the Homage de Fromage club in Surbiton, have for the past six months been working to develop a new past for Surbiton, and the result is Lefi Ganderson - the Goat Boy of Mount Seething.

Lefi’s tale incorporates themes of fear, prejudice and the triumph of good, love and tolerance, and to launch the legend, a series of events will take place later this month.

Organiser Robin Hutchinson, who brought residents Surbiton Ski Sunday and the wacky giant mousetrap game last year, said it was an excellent opportunity to celebrate the community’s past as well as its future.

Mr Hutchinson said: “Who knows how legends start. I think that’s part of the fun of it. This is only the beginning, just the start. Who knows where it will go from here.”

Over the weekend of February 27 and 28 there will be a community play, an archaeological dig to find the entrance to Lefi’s cave and a Seething festival procession, which everyone is invited to take part in.

Marshalls, organisers, artists, photographers, singers, actors, dancers, walkers are all needed, but if you do not have a special talent just turn up in fancy dress of your choice and get stuck in.

The story that will handed down to children is on the official website. It states: ”The tale of Lefi Ganderson and his battle with the Giant has passed through the ages. Its core narrative appears in many folk tales such as Jack and the Beanstalk and the classic Norwegian legend De Baby og de Gigantiske.

“But for many scholars the classic tale is still The Goat Boy of Seething. The legend of Lefi gives as clear a rendition of the saga as is possible. Unfortunately, the Seething Festival and its community procession stopped in 1921 and the legend was last told to Seething folk in 1927.”

Mr Hutchinson cannot deny the plan is “bonkers” but hopes the community will find the enthusiasm to get behind it and make it a success.
