Did you know that more than 23,000 dolphins are killed in Japan alone every year? Making it the largest scale slaughter of this kind in the whole world.
In the small fishing village of Taiji thirty fishermen partake in the dolphin drive from early September to late march. Operating with 13 motorized boats the fishermen go out to sea at early sunrise and look for migrating dolphins. Banging on metal pipes submerged with water, they coerce the dolphins with a "wall of sound" causing the dolphins to panic. They are then driven into a hidden cove and trapped. After being trapped inside the fishermen massacre the dolphins stabbing them with spears, harpoons, fishing hooks and knives. Slicing them apart; the water turns deep red with blood and the air fills with their screams.
The slaughtered dolphins are processed into meat and distributed to supermarkets and fish markets throughout Japan for human consumption. How is this legal, you ask? The government deems this legal because they are making a profit.
Prior to the killing a few dolphins are selected and sold to aquariums throughout the world. The fishermen get at least £150,000 per live show dolphin. Tax is taken from this sum so as you can see the government approves the industry.
The Japanese government also pays off other organizations and bribe countries to keep this legal. For example the international whaling committee (which is comprised of representatives of various nations) is influenced by countries whose vote has been bought by Japan. Although western countries vote against it there aren't enough votes to outnumber those bribed. The international whaling committee claims the dolphin is too small to be considered a whale and to be protected.
However to be clear it isn't the mass of Japanese people that are killing these dolphins. It is a small minority of the population. The Japanese people don't even know this is happening due to the fact the government have covered it up. Hiding information is a violation of article 21 in Japanese constitution that states that no secrecy is to be held from the people.
The dolphins that are massacred are sold for a mere £600 pounds each. The Japanese eat the dolphin meat unknowingly as it is usually disgusted as another form of fish. Though in actuality the meat is contaminated with toxic chemicals such as mercury. The level of mercury in dolphins is so high it is above the maximum level of mercury in Japanese food. The ministry of heath, labor and welfare of Japan set this maximum amount.
Every year the amount of dolphins decreases and eventually, if this number continues to decrease they will go extinct. So how can we sit here and allow this disgusting inhumane activity to reoccur. YEAR after YEAR? IF we wait too long it will be too late.
The only solution to this massacre is to force change by communicating the information about the issue. You can donate money, write to country leaders or write to international wailing committee. We have to push the other organizations to do something! Greenpeace and others have done NOTHING. They have just ignored the situation, which will never be solved unless we all do our part. Another action we as consumers can take is to stop attending aquariums with dolphins so there is no need for dolphins to be caught and sold. This could cause the industry to close down. Without having dolphins on display for entertainment, no one will buy them.
Most importantly, what we all must to spread the word. Let others know about what is happening so they can take action as well.
STOP THIS BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!
