A 17-year-old boy is recovering from burn injuries after two people set fire to him in Esher College during a lunch break on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident took place at about 12.30pm inside the college’s coffee bar, when the teenager was approached from behind by two attackers who set his hair alight.
It is believed a number of other students witnessed the incident, but it has not been confirmed whether those who set fire to his hair were pupils at the college.
The fire was quickly extinguished and the victim, who is from Twickenham, was taken to Teddington Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for minor burns to his head and hands.
The college in Weston Green Road, Thames Ditton, refused to comment on the incident, but Surrey Police confirmed they were investigating an assault.
A police spokesman said: “Detectives in Elmbridge are currently carrying out an investigation into an assault which took place at an address in Thames Ditton. At this stage no one has been arrested or charged in connection with the incident.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any information should call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference P10033360, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
