Undercover officers from Kingston’s serious crime squad stopped to help a man who was knocked off his bicycle and broke his collar bone.
PC Alex Gammampila and PC Clayton Worracker from the serious crime squad, and PC Peter Ba-han, an Old Malden officer, were driving along Ewell Road, Tolworth, in an unmarked car on Friday, January 29, when they witnessed the accident at about 11.30am.
A 50-year-old man fell off his bicycle when a car door was opened, and the officers jumped out to call an ambulance, remove and secure the bicycle and they stayed until the road was cleared.
The man’s wife, who asked not to be named, said: “My husband was in a state of shock and was unable to remember at the time a lot of the incident and because of their assistance he was able to concentrate on his treatment and recovery.”
A police spokesman said: “She was impressed with the fact they stopped rather than just saying ‘call an ambulance’.
“Some officers might stop, clear the scene and get other officers to assist, but they stayed until the end.
“They called the ambulance and made the necessary arrangements for the bicycle to be moved. It’s not normally in their jurisdiction.”
The man was taken to hospital with a broken collar bone and bruises and underwent an operation later in the week.
