Banstead Athletic 0 Hanworth Villa 1
At a very cold Merland Rise, Banstead Athletic took on a spirited Hanworth Villa side, writes Bob Lockyer.
This was a game that the As wanted to get three points from as Villa had played three more games than their hosts.
Leon Wallace had an early chance but couldn't get the ball under control when in the Villa area.
A good move saw Banstead's Wallace, Prendergast and Graham combine together in a move that sent the ball into the area but no one was there to convert it into a goal.
Paul Brady, in the Banstead goal, was certainly the busier of the keepers.
A mix-up in the Banstead area saw the ball hit by a Villa player strike Tom Hughes and end up in the As net, an unfortunate own goal.
A good strike from a free-kick by Adam Moriarty was well held by the Villa keeper.
Brady held a point blank shot to keep the score to 0-1 at half-time.
The second half began with Villa dominating early exchanges and bringing another save by Brady.
Banstead's defending was poor, another double save by Brady was made with Banstead coming under pressure.
Banstead made a double substitution, Villa made a substitution as well.
Banstead started pushing forward, a good shot by Zak Graham was held well by the Villa keeper.
Eighty-first minute and Brady was there again, Villa by now could have had four goals on the board.
Two minutes later, Aswan Patterson cleared off the As goal-line.
Villa player Antoini was clean through should have squared the ball but decided to go alone and Brady saved at his feet.
With the earlier snow flurries to contend with, the tempreature dropping, and a small flicker of the floodlights Banstead found even a draw was out of their reach.
