Fifty students from a Lambeth school visited the South London Liberal Synagogue last week as part of a project to teach youngsters about the Holocaust.
Pupils in years nine and 10 from Dunraven School listened to Holocaust survivor Mala Tribich talk about her childhood in hiding and later caring for herself and her cousin in the Ravensbruck and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps. They then watched a film at the Streatham synagogue before lighting candles and handing a personal message to Mala explaining what they had learned from her story.
The day was the idea of Rabbi Janet Darley and South London Liberal Synagogue member David Wirth.
Rabbi Darley said: “All of us who participated in the morning were very moved by the reaction of the students. Events like this help us to build a safer, stronger society in this country by creating awareness of the dangers posed by exclusion and persecution.”
