Nobody passing Thornton Heath library’s new pavilion can be in any doubt of what is inside, thanks to the addition of three-foot high lettering as part of a £2.2m refurbishment.
Work on the redevelopment, which includes the new pavilion and two rear extensions, has been put back several weeks because of snow and rain but is expected to be completed by the end of May.
The interior will boast a community meeting room, computer suite and separate teenager and children’s libraries, as well as a garden and new public toilets.
Councillor Steve Hollands, cabinet member for culture, said: “This is a really significant investment in a key local service, and I am confident that the improvements we are making will place the library at the very heart of the community in Thornton Heath.
“The bold modern architecture of the pavilion will clearly become a landmark for the whole area.”
A temporary library has been set up at 282 Brigstock Road until the project is complete, and is operating normal opening hours.
