A short film shot in Balham by London-based director Luke Snellin has been nominated for a Bafta after it won the Grand Prize at the Virgin Media Shorts Award.
Mixtape stars Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll actors Bill Milner and Charlotte Beaumont in a story of young love in the 1990s.
It was picked from more than 2,000 entries to win Virgin’s top prize of £30,000 by a panel of judges including Kevin Spacey, Gemma Arterton and Noel Clarke.
Snellin said: “I chose Balham because I had a very specific idea of what I wanted the two houses [the backdrop of the action] to look like inside and out, and Balham gave me with the house.
“I needed the houses to be attached, to have a timeless London look about them, with colourful doors and a family feel about the area.”
The film, which is nominated for this year’s Short Film award is only two minutes 20 seconds long, and took Snellin three weeks to make and only one day to shoot.
He said: “The road we chose ended up working out really well and was surprisingly quiet for London – everything just worked out well on the day.”
Snellin will now have to wait until the Bafta ceremony on February 21 at the Royal Opera House in London to see if he has won.
