The Green Party have announced intentions to meet with the Mayor of London later in the month [November] to discuss their opposition to the proposals involving Gunnersbury Park.
Last month, Darren Johnson, Green Party assembly member, visited the park and met with Boris Johnson to express the Green Party’s discontent with the plans to fell 400 mature trees and sell over 5 acres of land to build luxury housing. The money gained from doing so would be spent on the restoration of the grade 2 listed mansions which are located within the park. The Green Party also oppose plans to build a sports centre in the park due to the proximity of Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre.
Sarah Edwards, parliamentary candidate for Ealing and Acton, made the party’s stance clear, stating that they “oppose the loss of any green space in the park” and do not believe that a serious effort has been made by both Ealing and Hounslow councils to find an alternative method of raising the necessary funds to restore the buildings.
In the meantime, Darren Johnson is urging constituents to communicate with their local councillors to show their dissatisfaction with the proposals. He asks them to give their suggestions as to how the issue should be approached in such a way which would not result in a loss of park space and woodland, which provides valuable habitats and plays a crucial role in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
