Since the disaster struck on the 12th of January the world has seen a surge of empathy and sympathy for the victims involved. It has had more of a response than any natural disaster in the last 10 years and the support looks set to keep on coming.

However, through all the despair many have used the disaster to bring the global community together; the world of Hollywood is one of these where we have seen a galaxy of stars join together to support Haitians fighting for their lives.

First came the exclusive single, produced by Bono together with rapper Jay Z and pop sensation Rihanna; “Stranded”. Next the album entitled “Helping Haiti” which includes the official Haiti Earthquake relief song, produced by non other that Simon Cowell. The cover of R.E.M’s original track “Everybody Hurts” was released on the 6th has now been pronounced the “fastest selling charity single this century” according to The Official Charts Company, selling over 200,000 copies in the first 2 days.

However, it is not just the famous superstars who are making a contribution to help the suffering in Haiti. Kingston, as ever, is also getting involved to make a difference. Not only is HMV and all music stores in the Bentals centre and in and around town stocking shelves of the new relief single but many of the locals are fund raising on their own accord.

Speaking to resident Catherine Jeffries, 18, an aspiring actress and dancer, she revealed that she has made over £400 through hosting dance and talent shows at her school and charging people to see the final performance. Whilst she insists that she simply enjoys what she does, she has also ensured that 100% of her profits will go towards “The Sun's Helping Haiti” campaign as she says “I want to be sure that the money I’ve raised goes to the people that need it most, I think it’s wonderful all these celebrities are making so much money but that doesn’t mean people should just sit back, I’ve met plenty of people in Kingston interested in fund raising for this same cause”.

This sounded true as bar tender and hair dresser Matthew Brandon, working for Kingston night club “Escape” stated that he had also raised a substantial amount of money for the appeal. “I’ve made over £550 charging willing people extra who I cut hair for. Every client I have had so far has been more than willing to help and I plan to contribute the money to the Disasters Emergency Committee.”

So with more and more people jumping on the “Hope for Haiti” bandwagon, it’s only a matter of time before your money could save someone’s life.
