Three men were arrested on Tuesday, February 9, on suspicion of attempting to get residents in Weston Green to give them money by posing as fundraisers for a football team.
A group of teenagers went door-to-door in the area asking for sponsorship, and were even armed with a form to fill in.
Their activities raised the alarm with one Newlands Avenue resident, whose door they knocked on between 7pm and 8pm.
She called the police and later discovered a maroon coloured mountain bike had been stolen for her garage.
Later that evening, police caught a group of the men nearby.
They were arrested on suspicion of going equipped for theft, were taken to Staines police station and were released on bail until Monday, April 12.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or with any further information should contact Surrey Police on 0845 1252222, quoting reference EL/10/984, or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
