A daring thief has forced open an ATM by ripping it off the wall and has stolen “a substantial amount of money.”

The incident happened some time between 12.55am and 2am at the Tesco Express in Reigate Road, Ewell, on February 8 when man removed the cash machine by breaking most of the brickwork around it.

The ATM was forced open and a significant amount of money stolen from it.

The thief is described as a white man and of medium build. He was wearing a black jacket which had a high collar, black jeans, a dark brown woolly hat which had an orange and white stripe around it and black Reebok trainers.

Detectives from Epsom's Criminal Investigation Department are now appealing for witnesses.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Dion O’Shea said: “This is the first time we have seen an incident of this kind and we are working closely with our colleagues in neighbouring Forces to see if this is part of a wider series.

“The suspect was at the location for an hour and I am appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of the Ewell by-pass in the early hours of Monday morning to come forward.

“We have released photographs of the damage caused in the hope it will jog someone’s memory of the event and they may be able to provide us with additional information.

“A significant amount of money was stolen during this audacious incident and Tesco has offered a reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.

“Anyone with any information regarding this incident is urged to contact Surrey Police immediately or if you wish to remain anonymous please call Crimestoppers. It is vital we identify this suspect and ensure he is brought to justice.”
