Drivers faced traffic chaos this morning as work began to repair a leaking gas main on the A3.
The work, which is set to be completed tomorrow, saw traffic reduced to a single lane on the busy thoroughfare.
This morning, commuters faced two- to three-mile queues on road as work got underway - and they are being urged to expect more delays during peak travel times.
A Traffic For London spokesman said: "Lane restrictions are now in place in both directions. One lane open only in both directions.
"North-bound traffic on the A3 is queuing on approach from Shannon Corner."Traffic is also slow moving southbound on the A3 with queues approaching Roehampton Lane.
"Drivers are advised to seek an alternative route."
