Children will have the power to influence decisions at Sutton Council after an executive meeting voted in favour of setting up a young advisors network.
The network will be a formal part of the council and will be made up of around 25 young people from different areas, ages and backgrounds.
The group of 11 to 19-year-olds will go to meetings and take part in the consultation process on a range of issues.
The group was set up after a consultation with hundreds of young people found they wanted more face-to-face contact with the council and greater participation in the issues that affect their lives.
Executive member for children, young people and learning services Coun Tony Brett Young said: “There are thousands of young people in the area who, although they may be too young to vote, are still greatly affected by the decisions we make.
"It is a myth that all young people are apathetic – in Sutton they want to be involved. It will help us break down barriers between the generations and create regular dialogue so that the council can better serve everyone.”
