Merton police have dismissed suggestions of a “revolt” among officers campaigning against walking the beat alone.

More than 30 officers in the borough are thought to have signed a Facebook petition dismissing single-patrols as ineffective and endangering their safety.

Their names were pulled off the London-wide web page, that attracted more than 1,000 signatures, so they could be brought before senior officers to explain their actions. However none were reprimanded or disciplined.

The protest comes after Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Paul Stephenson spearheaded a move from pairs of officers to single patrols.

According to one officer, who asked not to be named, the underlying message within Merton was clear - comment on the group and risk losing your job.

He said: “It's interesting to see the people who claim single patrol is effective and beneficial are the ones sat behind a desk, in the safety of an office.

“We don't want to sound as though we're whinging, but the majority of people we come into contact with are not decent genuine people - they are often violent individuals with extensive criminal backgrounds.

"The only reason single patrol has been introduced is a cost-cutting exercise and to make it appear to the public there are more police on the streets. Our safety is being sacrificed for the sake of a few pounds.”

A Met spokesman said none of the individuals who took part in the Facebook discussions were reprimanded or otherwise disciplined, adding: “As with other organisations we regularly reiterate the clear guidance we have issued on the use of social networking sites.”

Merton borough commander, Chief Superintendent Chris Bourlet, said: "I am keen to increase the public confidence and reduce the fear of crime by making the best use of our resources. Single patrol enhances our effectiveness and is a visible demonstration of this intent to increase our presence on the streets of Merton.

"Single patrol is already working in Merton, just last week one of our special constables on single patrol arrested two individuals who have now been charged with fraud.

“Merton remains one of the safest boroughs in London."
