Plans to cut the number of ethnic minority pupils excluded from school and to combat domestic violence are among the measures in a scheme to promote equality in the borough.
The measures were announced this week with the launch of Merton Council’s corporate equality scheme, setting out a programme of action to address the discrimination faced in some parts of the community.
Care choices for disabled and elderly people are also set o be increased, along with broadening inter-faith education in schools.
The council said the scheme would break down barriers between different groups by increasing young people’s involvement in local democracy, developing young religion and belief ambassadors and ensuring transgender residents are treated with respect.
Merton Council cabinet member for community safety and engagement, Councillor Henry Nelless, said: “We all value the rich diversity of ages, religions and races which make Merton such a culturally varied and interesting place to live and work.”
