Lower-league supporters can be split into many categories, with the nutters and the anoraks at either end of the spectrum.

Two of the biggest groups are what I would term the happy-go-luckies, who have seen it all before and don’t let it bother them, and the moaners, who have seen it all before and do let it bother them.

The latter group were making their voices heard on Saturday during our draw with Wycombe Wanderers and, as I would put myself in the happy-go-lucky camp, I must say it was quite annoying.

The two blokes behind me were continually slaughtering John Akinde, in only his second game for the club, and it beggars belief that the half-time whistle was greeted with a smattering of boos.

The late equaliser tempered the moaners’ mood, but only slightly.

I am sure the majority of fans would agree with me that a little perspective is needed here – it wasn’t too long ago that we were in League Two and heading south fast.

Perhaps recent talk of the play-offs has caused a few Bees fans to get ahead of themselves, but we should remember that, even had we beaten Wycombe, we would still have been a long way back from sixth place.

Besides, is getting in the play-offs really such a thing to aim for?

All I have ever got out of these end-of-season matches is sleepless nights, constipation and a mild form of clinical depression.

When you add to this heinous mix the fact that it was our ex-chairman Martin Lange who came up with the idea for the damned things in the first place, then it really starts to smart.

The optimistic among us would say it would be different this time around, as we would not be the team collapsing, like Devon Lock on the home straight, rather we would be that annoying form side coming up on the rails to grab an undeserved promotion.

I don’t buy that theory for a second. If a minor miracle occurred and we made the play-offs, I am convinced our season would still end on a cold Tuesday night after a penalty shoot-out defeat in somewhere hellish, such as Huddersfield or Swindon.

I am not sneaking into the moaners camp (Are you sure? Ed), it is just that play-offs and Brentford don’t mix.

After the ups and (mainly) downs we have endured over the past few years, a season of mid-table obscurity sounds fine to me.
