Campaigners will debate climate change and its likely consequences at a public meeting in Wandsworth next week.

Hosted jointly by the Putney Society and Friends of the Earth (FoE), the public meeting will explore reactions to the problem and the potential outcomes of inaction.

An FoE spokesman said: “Sea levels are now rising three centimetres each decade. With climate change accelerating, the most dramatic indication being the rapid disintegration of Arctic sea ice, ocean levels are set to rise much faster. This will affect us in Wandsworth because over a quarter of our borough lies in the Thames flood plain.

“What will be the likely consequences of climate change in London, in particular for our children and grandchildren, and how adequate would a much more ambitious replacement to the Thames Barrier be?”

Speakers at the event include a national climate change campaigner for FoE, Tony Bosworth, who will talk about what the Government is doing, climate sceptics and what difference the general election could make.

Mandy King, who until recently was Wandsworth Council’s senior policy analyst for sustainability, will speak about the council’s newly-adopted environmental policy.

And Kate Lawrence of Wandsworth FoE, who will be talking about how to encourage the Wandsworth community, business, public authorities, householders and residents, to take action.

An extended question and answer session will follow.

Climate Change in London, What’s to be done? will be held on Thursday, February 25, from 7.30pm to 9pm, in The Brewer Building, St Mary’s Church, Putney Bridge.
