Twenty firefighters were called to tackle a large fire at Carpetright in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The official cause of the fire is unknown but reports from neighbours suggest it was due to an “electrical fault”.
Officers from Sutton, Mitcham, and New Malden fire stations were called to the blaze at 3.04am at the store, based in London Road.
The fire raged for an hour-and-a-half but was brought under control by 4.30am.
Both floors of the two-storey shop were “badly damaged” according to reports.
Kumar Saad, the manager of LFC, a fried chicken bar next door, said: “I left my shop at about midnight and there was no problem at all. It is quite shocking really, my business has been badly affected by the fire.
“We have had to shut the shop for two days. The fireman told us it was due to an electrical fault.”
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “This was a four-pump fire meaning about 20 firefighters were in attendance. The cause of the fire is at present unknown and an investigation is underway.”
