A fundraising skater has brought the spirit of the Winter Olympics to south London on behalf of earthquake victims.
Joanne Parr from Morden tackled an epic skating challenge at Streatham Ice Arena last week to raise money for victims of the disaster in Haiti. She was hoping to cover about 12 miles in two hours on the ice - but managed to to go twice as far in that time, just short of a full marathon distance.
Ms Parr, 34, raised about £600 for children’s charity UNICEF by completing an amazing 283 laps of the rink, travelling at an average speed of 12mph. She said: “Although I couldn’t stand up or even talk after the event, it was a real challenge and well worth the effort.”
Her fundraising total was boosted after a whip-round at her favourite pub, the Trafalgar in South Wimbledon, and donations from the congregation at St Martin’s Church in Morden.
