Rugby player Andrea Hinton died suddenly just 12 hours after she was diagnosed with acute leukaemia.

To mark the first anniversary of Miss Hinton's death Sutton and Epsom RFC Ladies organised a special memorial game and fundraising lunch attracting around 400 people.

Former captain Miss Hinton, 31, who lived in Sutton and worked as a PE teacher in Surrey, lapsed into a fatal coma on February 12, 2009.

Around 1, 800 mourners joined a tribute group on social networking site Facebook, including pupils she taught at Nonsuch High School for Girls.

Playing as Andrea's Angels, Sutton and Epsom RFC Ladies secured a 32-0 victory against a combination side of Newbury RFC Ladies and Rosslyn Park RFC Ladies.

The match was followed by a memorial lunch and a clash between Sutton and Epsom and Haywards Heath. The event has so far raised £1,250 for Miss Hinton's long supported charity Breast Cancer Care.

Sutton and Epsom RFC Ladies winger and close friend of Miss Hinton's, Rachel Corrigan said she helped to organise the event to celebrate the life of one of the club's “finest” and “highly respected ambassadors”.

She said: “It was an absolutely fantastic event. Former players who now live all over the country travelled down for the day.

“There was no member of the club who did not know her – she touched everyone's life and her memory will always live on.

“I think would have loved our special day and I want to thank everyone for their support.”
