The recognisable eco village next to Kew Bridge is a familiar sight for those who live and work nearby. However, it is soon to be pulled apart, and the inhabitants cleared out of their well-loved home. The developer, St George PLC has recently been granted permission to build a large development which will include residential units, a fitness suite, office and retail areas and a cafe/ restaurant. This will completely tear apart the environmentally-friendly community that currently live in the site, and the huge development will produce a lot of waste, and no doubt damage the natural environment, something which the eco-villagers are not at all happy about.
The villagers have only lived in the location since June of last year, when they made it home by setting up tents, art and music workshops and even keeping a herb and vegetable garden. However, less than a year later and they are being forced to leave their beloved community.
After the decision was made last week at a council meeting, there has been uproar and disgust from the eco villagers, green parties and even some of the local community, who are dreading “the monstrous development”. Those in favour of the development claim that it will produce needed jobs and housing. There are still protests and ongoing attempts to cancel the building of the residential complex, and although hopes are not high, the villagers will not give up their fight.
