Robbers on a motorbike unwittingly stole an empty cash box when they targeted a security van in Epsom yesterday (Wednesday).
A security guard placed the empty box on the ground just after leaving the Epsom High Street branch of Santander - formerly Abbey - when the raiders struck just before 4pm.
The yellow and black motorcycle, carrying two men, mounted the pedestrian area and they snatched the cash box - not realising it had no cash in it.
Despite the security guard trying to stop the robbers by pushing them off the bike, they scrambed back on board before the box could be retrieved.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.
Detective Sergeant Glenn Parker said: “Epsom High Street was busy with shoppers at 4pm on Wednesday afternoon and we have already spoken with a number of witnesses.
“However, we urgently need to identify these two men on the motorcycle and I am appealing to anyone who has any information at all regarding this theft to come forward.
“The cash box was empty and fortunately the guard was not injured despite the scuffle and his best efforts to catch the thieves.
“Information from the community is vital in investigations such as this and your call could make all the difference.
“Perhaps you saw this distinctive motorcycle before the incident and didn’t think anything was suspicious at the time.
“We are reviewing CCTV from the town centre and enquiries into this are on-going but if you can help please contact Surrey Police or Crimestoppers if you wish to remain anonymous.”
They described the driver as wearing a white helmet, goggles and a fluorescent yellow jacket. His accomplice - and passenger - wore dark camouflage trousers and dark-coloured trainers on.
Anyone with information about this incident should contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 quoting reference EP/10/745 or Crimestoppers if you wish to remain anonymous.
