Three shops in Lambeth were caught selling cigarettes or alcohol to underage customers during a sting operation by police and trading standards officers.

Five volunteer test purchasers aged between 14 and 15 were sent in to 76 shops across the borough over three days in February.

Two shops were caught selling cigarettes to the volunteers. One in Westow Hill was given a caution, while the other in Streatham High Road was summoned to court.

A shop in Wandsworth Road was caught selling alcohol to a minor and the shop assistant was given an £80 fine.

Police Sergeant Mark Brindley said: “The operation was deemed very successful as nearly all the shops did not sell. This is particularly reassuring as many youth antisocial problems originate from youths being able to get hold of alcohol and cigarettes.”
