Organisers of a major exhibition looking back at post-war Sutton are appealing to residents to unearth memorabilia that can go on display.

Sutton 1948 will celebrate life in the borough during the post-war period and in particular when London last hosted the Olympic Games.

Residents are being asked to dig out all those treasures and artefacts, which can include anything from old photos, newspaper articles and souvenirs to wedding dresses, toys and games, home cine-film or work-related paraphernalia.

Organisers want items from the late 1940s and early 1950s that will give a flavour of life in Sutton at the time, a period of austerity and rebuilding after the ravages of the Second World War.

Many readers will remember 1948 being a landmark year. The NHS was launched, Prince Charles was born, Ghandi assassinated and the state of Israel came into existence.

Councillor Graham Tope, Sutton Council’s leisure spokesman, said: “We want any item that will help paint a picture of Sutton in the years immediately after the war.

“You may have items from the 1948 Games themselves or keepsakes and heirlooms from the late 1940s and early 1950s.

“Be part of this excellent exhibition by hunting in your attics, under your beds or in your cellars, and digging out your post-war artefacts.”

The exhibition, held at the Europa Gallery in Sutton Library, is being organised by Sutton Council and all items chosen will be returned to their owners.
