Chelsea Football Club mascot Stamford the Lion has signed up for the London Marathon to raise money for the club’s official UK charity partner, 95.8 Capital FM’s Help a London Child.

A spokesman for Stamford said: “To get in shape to take on the gruelling 26.2 miles on April 25, Stamford is training hard at The Chelsea Club, the luxury health club and spa at his home Stamford Bridge, as well as putting in the miles around the streets of London. His personal trainer has developed a strict regime to ensure Stamford does not put in a paw performance at the world famous marathon.”

Darren Garrett, his personal trainer said: “It’s going to be tough but we’ve already drawn up a training plan to help Stamford get in shape. He’s started his running and he’s really putting it in although it may be difficult to get him to change his diet and cut back on the raw meat. Stamford knows his pride is at stake here but Help a London Child is a fantastic cause so we can be sure he’ll give it his all.”

Help a London Child was launched in 1975 by founder Lord Attenborough CBE and helps thousands of London’s youngsters who are living with abuse, poverty, homelessness, disability, and illness.
