Freediving expert Sara Campbell is hosting a yoga workshop in Wandsworth ahead of her bid to set a fifth World Record.
Ms Campbell, 37, set her fourth World Record last April in the Bahamas, diving to a depth of 96m, the size of Big Ben, and is leading the class as part of a tie-up with sports centre group Nuffield Health.
Sara, who is from Putney and qualified as a Kundalini yoga teacher seven years ago, has attributed much of her success in the water to yoga.
She said: “The skills I have learned through the yoga are applicable to everyone, being able to manage and reduce stress, better physical condition and body awareness, improved breathing which has positive impact on health across the board.”
Dubbed, “part woman, part fish,” and Mighty Mouse - because of her small 4ft 11in frame - Ms Campbell is to start training soon for her next competition in June, but believes her fusion of yoga and diving will help others.
She said: “Students are finding my unique take on coaching really helpful, as I combine a lot of my yoga and meditation techniques with the water skills.
"One of the greatest challenges in freediving is to overcome the fear of being underwater without an air supply and meditation can be invaluable in helping people assess a situation and approach it in a positive and calm way, thereby increasing their chances of success.
"This skill can be applied to any area of life and can be invaluable to anyone keen to learn how to deal with stress more effectively.”
Freediving involves diving to extreme depths unaided on only one breath of air. Divers’ lungs get compressed to about a tenth of their size at 90m, and there is a serious risk of black-out.
The yoga workshop, at Nuffield Health Centre in Latchmere Road, Battersea, will be held on March 29 at 7pm and is open to the public.
Tickets cost £15. Those interested in attending, should contact the centre on 020 7228 4400.
