A police investigation has been launched after six people were taken to hospital following a major car crash in Kingston.

A 1,500ft stretch of Kingston Road was closed for nearly six hours, after two cars and a motorcycle collided into each other at the Water Road junction at about 6pm on February 21.

One woman was stuck in traffic for an hour-and-a-half coming from New Malden roundabout; a car journey which usually takes five minutes.

She said: “Waters Road is a bit of a nasty junction because as you’re going up Kingston Road, towards the Robert Peel pub, you have to come up a slight hill.

“The place was swarming with police and I could tell something serious had happened.”

Kingston police arrived at the scene at 6.21pm and within minutes put up a 1,500 ft cordon in Kingston Road, between Gloucester Road and Hampden Road, about the length of three football pitches.

It was not until 9.45pm that Kingston Council arrived to clear up the debris, according to the police who reopened the roads at midnight on Monday.

Meanwhile, three ambulance crews and specialist doctors rushed to the scene and took six people to Kingston Hospital and St George’s Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “A 20-year-old woman was taken to Kingston Hospital as a priority with arm and leg injuries. A 55-year-old woman was also taken to St George’s as a priority with a head injury.

“Three patients with minor injuries were also taken to Kingston Hospital, along with a fourth patient with a head injury.”

The investigation has now been taken on by the Metropolitan Police’s Central Traffic Unit.
