Firefighters cut a man from his car on Monday, March 8, after he is understood to have passed out at the wheel and crashed.
New Malden’s watch manager Steve Preston said the man was believed to have lost consciousness while driving and had no recollection of the resulting pile-up, which involved two or three other vehicles.
The accident happened at Kingston Road’s junction with King Henry’s Drive, one road down from Waters Road.
Mr Preston said: “The fellow had driven straight into another car.
“He had no recollection of what happened. From my point of view the whole rescue was a success and the crew worked together really well.”
They received the call at 6.20pm and spent about an hour-and-a-half at the scene, with crews from Surbiton and Wimbledon and the London Ambulance Service attending.
Police arrived at the scene a minute after being called but did not need to close off any roads.
The man who passed out was 44 and taken to Kingston Hospital. Police said his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
A 41-year-old woman was also treated at the scene.
London Ambulance would not reveal further details about the cause of the accident due to patient confidentiality.
