Diners enjoying an afternoon hamburger were smoked out of a McDonald's when fire broke out behind one of the fat containers yesterday afternoon.
More than 100 people were left milling outside at the Collonades, Purley Way as neighbouring buildings were evacuated while firefighters tackled the blaze.
Four fire engines from Purley and Croydon stations were called, but one was sent back while the rest dealt with the fire using powder extinguishers and breathing apparatus.
A store spokeswoman refused to comment on the cause of the fire, which broke out at about 4.30pm, but confirmed the store had reopened this morning.
The fire investigation team based at New Cross is investigating the cause of the blaze.
