Cyclists were given a boost this week, when work started on a new cycle lane in New Malden.
On Wednesday, the east side of Malden Road, from Cromwell Avenue to the south of Welbeck Close, was Tarmacked by converting some of the pavement and a section of grass verges.
The new cycle lane is part of an estimated £45,000 project, funded by Transport for London, which was approved by the Maldens and Coombe neighbourhood committee in September 2009.
A spokesman for Kingston Council said the changes would be help make New Malden’s roads safer and would encourage more people to ride their bikes.
He said: “The only section of grass verge affected are a small area around an established tree outside number 156 Malden Road and the verge area to the south of the junction with Welbeck Close.
“The scheme also entails altering the road markings on Malden Road to provide a northbound cycle lane.”
