Police are appealing for witnesses after three vehicles stolen in Sutton were used in an attempted theft of an ATM from Sainsbury's in Purley Way, Croydon on Wednesday.
The vehicles - a JCB digger, a white truck and a black 4x4 - were stolen from industrial premises, off Beddington Lane, around 3am that same night.
It is believed that the thieves travelled to the Sainsbury's store in the vehicles.
Witnesses reported seeing four people attempting to steal an ATM machine located at the front of the store using the digger to damage the wall.
The thieves then attaching a rope to the white truck and attempted to pull the ATM out of the wall, causing substantial damage to the building.
The thieves were disturbed by staff at the store and made off from the scene in the 4x4 and the white truck.
A spokesman for Sutton Police said: "The JCB Digger was left at the scene. The suspects are described as four men, wearing hooded tops with the hoods worn up covering their heads."
Croydon CID are investigating.
