Dozens of motorists took advantage of free roadside emissions tests arranged by Wandsworth Council's environmental services team as part of the on-going efforts to reduce air pollution.
The aim of the exhaust tests was to pinpoint vehicles whose engines are not performing to the optimum level and may need a service or repair so pollutants are kept to an absolute minimum.
The testers identified several vehicles which would not meet the current MOT standard and were able to give their owners advice about vehicle upkeep and servicing.
A council spokesman said: “One motorist was so concerned with the condition of his vehicle that he booked an immediate service with his local garage before leaving the testing area.”
Wandsworth council’s cabinet member environment, Councillor Sarah McDermott, said: “These free tests are carried out as part of our efforts to raise awareness of air pollution and improve air quality in the borough.
“For most vehicles, a simple routine service will often be enough to solve any problems and cut emissions quite dramatically.”
The tests were carried out at Sainsbury’s in Garratt Lane and Asda at Clapham Junction.
