Emergency services have confirmed a patient flown out of Furzedown Recreation Ground on Friday was a fire victim.
A woman in her 50s was treated for burns to her legs and smoke inhalation after fire crews were called to Nimrod Road at around 10am.
Neighbours raised the alarm after a couch caught fire in a ground floor flat at the junction of Southcroft Road.
Tooting firefighters David Lean and Pete Fenn broke in through the window to rescue her.
Mr Lean said: “We found her in the room where the fire was. She was semi-conscious, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. We just passed her through the window.
“Once you breathe in that smoke, you haven’t got long. It knocks you out pretty quickly.
“It was pretty lucky.”
She was rushed to the nearby recreation ground, where an air ambulance landed and took her to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, where there is a specialist burns unit.
The fire is being treated as non-suspicious but the cause is under investigation.
Two engines from Tooting attended with one from Mitcham.
