Almost 200 people paid tribute to a well-known football player, coach and manager.

Keith Stewart from Garth Road, North Cheam died on February 26, aged 68, after a battle with cancer.

Mr Stewart, who played for Dorking FC during his 20s, was a manager and coach at Oakway Celtic football club in Morden for many years.

In the early 80s Mr Stewart became manager of the Lord Nelson pub team Trafalgar FC and only gave up when he became ill. As well as this, he spent several years as social secretary at Morden Vale FC. Over the years, Mr Stewart won many cups and leagues.

The Lord Nelson, North Cheam, closed the pub to the public for Mr Stewart's wake after 180 people turned up.

Wife Sandra Stewart, 66, said: “He was always into football and knew a lot of people through it.

“He got on very well with people. He was a very caring type of person, a real family man. He made friends very easily and could talk to anyone.”

Mr Stewart became ill in September last year, his condition deteriorated after Christmas and in February he was taken into St George's hospital, where he died.

Mrs Stewart said: “Life was a struggle for him mentally and physically and there was nothing any of us could do to help him.”

Mr Stewart leaves behind his wife, son Paul, daughter Donna June and five grandchildren Sam, Matthew, David, Oliver and James.
