Sutton Schools Borough U11 produced one of their best performances of the season to win 5-1 in their London Shield quarter-final at Islington.
Sutton took the lead when Billy Morcombe blasted the ball in from the edge of the box following a corner, but then Islington responded immediately with a superbly hit goal from outside the area which had the home fans buzzing.
But such is the mental toughness of this Sutton team that they took a deep breath and proceeded to give a lesson into how to tame a side with their tails up. Noah Vezzu hit a deflected shot to give Sutton the lead back and then saw his free kick sail over the ‘keeper to knock the wind out of the sails of the home side.
In the second half, Sutton continued to soak everything up and mount a series of attacks of their own. As Islington ran out of steam, Sutton struck again and Zack Norman cleverly exploited the new time and space to convert Cameron Steele’s cross and then latch onto a Stefan Ilic through ball to leave Islington shell shocked and well beaten. Sutton now play Barking and Dagenham in the semi-final.
South West Trains player of the match with a towering display at centre back was Billy Morcombe. Sutton play Lewisham this Saturday in the Gills Shield (Mill Lane 10.30) Sutton: Feeley (Brookfield), McGee -captain, Healy (St. Cecilia’s), Hopper (Homefield), Hicks (Robin Hood), Vezzu (The Avenue), Steele, Morcombe (Bandon Hill), Jeevan, Scantlebury (High View), Bannister (Benhilton), Norman, O’Leary-Blade (St. Mary’s), Ilic (Cheam Common)
