The empty Borders store in Kingston Market Place is likely to be taken over by a clothing store, despite a survey showing Kingston residents would prefer the return of a Borders-style store or a cultural venue.
Vital Kingston, which is campaigning for the local community to have a say in the property’s future, held its first public meeting in the town centre on Saturday, March 13.
The group said 460 people took part in its poll, with a book store with regular cultural events the most popular, followed by a cultural centre and craft workshops.
Campaign co-ordinator David Randall said: “The current owners refuse to talk to use largely because they are in negotiations and are scared people will be put off. We want to mobilise the community to scare them into talking to the community. That is where people power comes in.”
Owner Invista Real Estate Investment Management described the results as “nice ideas”, but said Vital Kingston had to put forward proposals which would be considered on market terms.
The company appointed administrator of Borders, which closed in December, said the property had a yearly rent of £447,750, a service charge £94,100 and a rateable value of £287,500.
Jo Wall of Invista said: “It has been well received by the market and a number of fashion operators are interested. We have also had various discussions with Starbucks. Those have been in conjunction with operators.”
Mr Wall said the deal could be agreed within a month.
