By community correspondent Steve Wicks: Rainbows, the youngest section of Guiding for girls aged 5 - 7, are encouraged to adopt an Olivia doll as their Rainbow Unit mascot during their meetings and to take it with them when they go out on visits. Rainbows from 3rd East Sutton Rainbows went a step further by arranging to exchange their Olivia doll with one from a Rainbow unit from the Isle of Skye in order to have links with girls from a different part of the country. ‘Olivia from the Isle of Syke arrived shortly before Christmas, she has come to stay with the 3rd East Sutton Rainbows and our Olivia has gone to stay with the 14th Isle of Skye Rainbows and Brownies’ said Rainbow leader Danni Massingham ‘and both of the Olivias are having fun and enjoying their different experiences. Cards and presents have been exchanged and for Thinking Day we sent postcards and letters to the Isle of Skye Rainbows, along with an update on what their Olivia has been doing including coming to our light disco party which helped us gain 5 points for the 100 Challenge. We have been learning about how different it is on the Isle of Skye. There are a total of 7 Rainbows and 5 Brownies. They meet at the same time and hold the Rainbow and Brownie meetings at opposite ends of the hall. Portree is the biggest town on the Isle of Skye and our Olivia is staying at Carbost. The Isle of Skye is near the top of Scotland and you can get there over a bridge on a ferry. One of our Rainbows said she could not believe they only have 7 Rainbows and 5 Brownies, but was having fun showing the Isle of Skye Olivia what it's like to live in a busy area’. As Girlguiding UK continues through its Centenary year there are opportunities for girls and adults of all backgrounds and experience to gain new skills, make new friendships and most importantly have fun.
