A spring clean has started in Reigate and Banstead, after the council invited people to take part in its Love Where You Live campaign.
It wants residents to organise the cleaning of their street, local park, village or school with the council providing the litter pickers, gloves and bags.
The first event was in Chipstead Village on Saturday, March 20, organised by Chipstead Residents’ Association.
Other areas taking part include Burgh Heath, Tattenhams, Woodmansterne and Kingswood.
Councillor Julian Ellacott, executive member for the environment, said: “We know residents are really passionate about maintaining the beauty of the borough, and we want to involve them in keeping it that way.”
Using a mix of education and enforcement the scheme is aiming to change public behaviour instead of continually cleaning up afterwards.
Leaflets about Love Where You Live are available from shops, the town hall reception and Earlswood Depot reception.
