A major operation cracking down on dangerous dogs will take place in Lambeth next month.
Council officers and police will hit the borough’s parks and streets to identify dog owners who are breaking the law, for example by not keeping their animal under control.
Enforcement action could be taken against dog owners breaking the law, including confiscating dogs, or council tenants having their tenancy demoted.
Councillor Mark Bennett, Lambeth’s cabinet member for community safety, said: “For too many people, dogs are a status symbol. We know how concerned local people are about this issue, and that’s why agencies in Lambeth are coming together to crack down on the problem.
He added: “People have a right to walk down the street or enjoy their local park with fearing they will encounter a dog that is not properly under control.”
The council has also drawn up an animal welfare charter, stating its responsibilities and those of residents to ensure dogs and other pets are treated humanely, and residents are not left at risk.
