Plans to redevelop the only remaining post office in Putney were approved last week, plunging the future of postal services in the area into doubt.
Wandsworth Council’s planning committee approved a scheme, by the leaseholder of the Upper Richmond Road site, to build a five-storey building containing 14 flats and a shop.
Last week, we reported that services could close while redevelopment takes place and if an alternative building is not found, the Post Office may be forced to set up a temporary structure such as a Portakabin.
After the decision was announced, Putney MP Justine Greening said: “It is worrying the Post Office managed to get themselves down to one site that they can’t control.
“We now have to work together to make sure services are maintained. Our local service now faces uncertainty, it is a disgrace.”
Both Ms Greening and the Post Office are now trying to contact the leaseholder to work out how to proceed.
A Post Office spokesman said: “It is still too early to speculate on the matter and timescales for any announcement.”
